Quick guide

Make a scanned PDF searchable

01

Drop in your scanned file, several PDFs at once, or photos you took of paper pages.

02

Tick the language(s) printed on the pages and decide what you want back: a searchable PDF, an editable DOCX, a TXT file or all three.

03

Press Start OCR, watch the page counter, then save what you got. Everything is processed by your own browser.

What you get

Why this toolbox gets scanned paperwork done

Find any word in old scans

Your pages keep their exact look. Behind each word the tool lays matching hidden text, so search, highlight and copy behave like in a born-digital file.

Bilingual paperwork handled

Tick up to 4 of the 56 supported languages for one job, handy for a German contract with English annexes. Latin-alphabet, Cyrillic and Greek languages give a searchable PDF; Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Persian and Hebrew go to DOCX or TXT.

Smart about mixed files

Pages that are already digital can be left alone, and on a single PDF you can type just the range you care about. Pages scanned sideways or upside down are turned the right way before reading.

Nothing to install

No desktop OCR software, no sign-up and no watermark. The open-source Tesseract engine works inside the browser tab, so the paperwork never travels to a server.

Make scanned PDF searchable: who it helps and how

A scan is a photograph of paper. You can read it, but your computer cannot: search finds nothing, you cannot paste a quote, and the file never shows up when you search your folders. Adding a text layer through OCR fixes all three without changing what the pages look like.

Real jobs this tool handles

  • Students: turn photocopied book chapters into PDFs where you can jump to a term and copy citations into notes.
  • Office and HR teams: make signed contracts, payslips and personnel forms findable in a shared archive by name or ID number.
  • Freelancers and accountants: OCR a stack of supplier invoices so amounts and invoice numbers can be searched at tax time.
  • Real estate agents: search lease agreements and property deeds for a clause instead of scrolling through dozens of pages.
  • Teachers: export a scanned worksheet to DOCX, fix a few words and print an updated version.

Getting a clean result

Scan at 200-300 dpi when you have the choice. For tiny footnotes, open Recognition settings and pick High accuracy (300 dpi); for big, clear type, Fast (150 dpi) saves time. When a document mixes two languages, tick both. Shoot phone photos from straight above with even light. After the run, the summary tells you the average confidence and how many pages were rotated or skipped, and a preview lets you copy all recognised text at once.

What it will not do

Handwritten notes are read poorly, tables in Word or TXT output turn into plain paragraphs, and the language files must be fetched once over the internet before the first run. Very long documents on a phone may need to be split into smaller page ranges to avoid running out of memory.

Answers

Questions people ask about this task

How do I make a scanned PDF searchable without installing software?

Open this page, add the scan, choose its language and keep Searchable PDF selected. Press Start OCR and save the new file; it opens in any reader with working search.

Can I search a PDF made from phone photos?

Yes, if you run it through OCR first. Add the JPG, PNG or WEBP pictures here and they are merged, in the order you picked them, into a single PDF with hidden text you can search.

Will the searchable version look different from my scan?

No. The original pages stay as they were; only an invisible text layer is added on top, so print and screen output are unchanged.

How long does it take to OCR a 50-page PDF?

Expect a few seconds per page on a laptop and more on a phone, because the work happens locally, so a 50-page scan is a matter of minutes rather than seconds. A progress bar with remaining time is shown and Cancel stops it whenever you like.

Why can I not search my PDF even after scanning it at the office?

Most copiers save pages as pictures with no text inside. Running OCR adds the missing text; if a page already has real text, the tool reports it and can skip it.

What if my scanned PDF is password protected?

Remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, then bring the unlocked copy back here for OCR.
